MTN South Africa is part of MTN Group, a multinational telecommunications operator that boasts more than 233 million subscribers across its markets in 22 countries in Africa and the Middle East.
The company received its 3G license in 1993 and started rolling out its operations the following year. It offers voice, data, telemetry and enterprise services to over 30 million subscribers and enterprise customers.
MTN’s 2G network covers over 98% of the population, its 3G network over 85% of the population and its LTE network approximately 45% of the population. MTN SA is one of the key providers of fiber to the home (FTTH), a high-speed fiber network that it has deployed in over 10 000 homes.
MTN has made substantial investments not only in expanding its network, but also in building its own transmission capabilities. To that end, MTN is part of the National Long Distance (NLD) consortium that is rolling out a 5 000 kilometre fibre network grid that will connect major cities across the country.
MTN has also invested substantially in submarine cables to improve broadband capacity. MTN is the single biggest investor in the West Africa Cable System (WACS), a submarine cable that links South Africa and the west coast of Africa to Europe. In addition to WACS, MTN also invested in the Eastern Africa Submarine Cable System (EASSy), a fibre optic cable system that links South Africa and the east coast of Africa to Europe.
MTN has also invested in Africa Coast to Europe (ACE) submarine cable, which connects the west coast of Africa with France.
These investments in the submarine cables will complement the terrestrial fiber network.
Mindful of the socio-economic challenges facing the country, MTN invests over 1% of its revenue to philanthropy initiatives through the MTN SA Foundation. The primary focus of the MTN SA Foundation is to facilitate access to education, health and foster the development of entrepreneurship.
To that end, MTN, in partnership with the provincial Department of Education and the Department of Health, has donated multimedia centres to schools and nursing colleges across the country.
MTN’s enterprise unit, MTN Business offers voice, data and connectivity solutions to enterprise customers including small and medium sized business, enterprises and the public sector.
Through a partnership with Microsoft, MTN provides pan-African cloud computing services from the telecommunications operator’s data centres. MTN Business also has an internet of things (IOT) platform, which provides African enterprises with greater control and advanced management features for their connected devices and SIM cards.
MTN is the proud sponsor of properties that resonate with its customers. These include sponsorship of the popular MTN8 football tournament, Bloemfontein Celtic Football Club, MTN Joyous Celebration and Afrikaans is Groot music festival.
